THE STORY
| Sometime in 1952, the proprietors of the Royal Palms resort in Scottsdale, Arizona, recruited young waitresses from the Poland Springs resort in Maine to work for them over the winter months. Jeanne Kenney, Rosemary McGowan and others drove across the USA and spent the winter through the spring of 1953 working at the Royal Palms. While working at the Royal Palms, Jeanne met a young couple, Andy and Melba, who were starting up a hunting and camping ranch in the wilderness of Idaho near the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. They hired Jeanne to work as a guide on horseback on hunting expeditions during the summer of 1953. They thought her out-of-place Boston accent would amuse the guests! Jeanne was an artist and used her skills to take these amazing photographs.
In the summer of 2025, Jeanne's three children and other members of her family and circle of friends spent 2 weeks at the B Bar C Ranch which looks and feels unchanged since our mother was there in 1953! We had an amazing trip honoring her memory. Jeanne Kenney's 1953 photos are captioned in red font below, and the 2025 photos from her family's trip to the ranch are captioned in green font below. We discovered that our mother was right, it is a very special and stunningly beautiful place, and our hosts in 2025 were just as authentic and gracious as those that hosted my mother in 1953. I can't wait to go back! And yes, I will hop on that plane with Gus and Courtney and take a few days to visit their camp at Loon Creek Hot Springs!

We found out when we stayed at the main lodge at the B Bar C ranch that this photo was taken in the Camas Creek tributary (Rams Creek) right next to the cabin shown in the photos at the top of this web page!!! I can't believe Jeanne caught a fish that size in what was essentially a drainage ditch that is located to the left of the pavilion shown in the 2025 photos.
